Microsoft acknowledges a bug that results in approximately 9GB of undeletable files in Windows 11.

The update has led to various problems, including blue screen crashes related to gaming and Intel drivers, as well as disappearing mouse cursors. One particularly troubling issue is that the Windows 11 24H2 update appears to create a large cache folder during installation that cannot be deleted. Just how large? An impressive 8.63GB—a substantial portion of storage even for most drives.

As of October 16, 2024, Microsoft has acknowledged this perplexing bug, clarifying that it is merely a reporting issue. When users run Windows Update Cleanup, the files are indeed deleted, but Disk Cleanup inaccurately continues to indicate that the storage is still being occupied. Microsoft is currently working on a fix for this error.

It's important to note that the presence of a cache is not uncommon; Windows typically generates a cache to temporarily hold installation files during updates. The unusual aspect is that this cache cannot be removed afterward.

According to Windows Latest, attempts to delete the cache through the Control Panel have been unsuccessful. While users can select the cache for deletion, the files remain intact. Other methods of clearing the Windows update cache have also failed, with the only solution being a complete reinstall of Windows.

Microsoft is aware of the situation, with multiple users reporting the issue in the Feedback Hub:

“I’m experiencing the same issue. I’ve tried the cleanup multiple times, including using SFC Scannow, but nothing worked. It seems like a bug that will be fixed.”

“Same problem here. It’s leaving 8.63GB of data behind.”

“I used Disk Cleanup to remove Windows Update Cleanup files, which take up nearly 9GB of space, yet even after using the utility, it still shows the files haven’t been cleared.”

A patch to address this problem is in the works and will be included in an upcoming update. In the meantime, it's advisable not to attempt to delete the Windows Update cache, as the hassle of reinstalling Windows isn't worth the trouble just to free up those files.

A polarized 3D system utilizes polarization glasses to create the effect of three-dimensional images by controlling the light that reaches each eye, a technique known as stereoscopy.


To display stereoscopic images and films, two images are superimposed on the same screen or display using different polarizing filters. Viewers wear inexpensive 3D glasses, each equipped with a polarizing filter for the left and right eye. These filters are set to different polarizations, ensuring that each eye receives only the corresponding image. This method generates a three-dimensional experience by showing the same scene from slightly different angles, each with its unique polarization. This system allows multiple viewers to enjoy the stereoscopic images simultaneously.


However, polarized 3D systems, along with other stereoscopic systems, often face the issue known as the Vergence-Accommodation Conflict.


Linearly polarised glasses


To create a stereoscopic motion picture, two images are superimposed on the same screen using orthogonal polarizing filters, typically set at 45 and 135 degrees. The viewer then dons linear polarized glasses, which contain corresponding orthogonal filters aligned with those of the projector. Each filter allows only light that matches its polarization to pass through while blocking light with perpendicular polarization. This setup ensures that each eye perceives only one of the projected images, thus creating the illusion of depth. However, linear polarized glasses require the viewer to keep their head level; any tilting of the glasses can cause the visual channels to overlap, resulting in a loss of the 3D effect. This restriction can make long viewing sessions uncomfortable, as head movement must be minimized to preserve the immersive experience.


A linear polariser converts an unpolarised beam into one with a single linear polarisation. The vertical components of all waves are transmitted, while the horizontal components are absorbed and reflected.

Circularly polarized glasses

To create a stereoscopic motion picture, two images are superimposed on a single screen using circular polarizing filters of opposite handedness. The viewer then wears glasses equipped with analyzing filters—essentially reversed circular polarizers—also of opposite handedness. In this configuration, left-circularly polarized light is blocked by the right-handed analyzer, while right-circularly polarized light is obstructed by the left-handed analyzer. This approach achieves a visual experience akin to that of traditional stereoscopic viewing with linear polarized glasses, but with the added advantage that viewers can tilt their heads without losing left/right separation. However, this flexibility comes with a drawback: the fusion of stereoscopic images may be compromised due to the discrepancy between the alignment of the viewer's eye plane and the original camera angles.

As illustrated in the figure, the analyzing filters consist of a quarter-wave plate (QWP) and a linearly polarized filter (LPF). The QWP converts circularly polarized light into linearly polarized light, with the angle of polarization of the resulting light dependent on the handedness of the incoming circularly polarized light. In this example, left-handed circularly polarized light entering the analyzing filter is converted by the QWP into linearly polarized light aligned with the transmission axis of the LPF, allowing it to pass through. On the other hand, right-handed circularly polarized light would be transformed into linearly polarized light oriented along the LPF’s absorbing axis, which is perpendicular to the transmission axis, resulting in it being blocked.

By rotating either the QWP or the LPF by 90 degrees around an axis perpendicular to their surfaces (parallel to the light wave's direction of propagation), an analyzing filter can be created that blocks left-handed circularly polarized light instead of right-handed light. Importantly, rotating both the QWP and the LPF by the same angle does not alter the functionality of the analyzing filter.

Before you begin

How to set up Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) :

  1. Press the Steam button to bring up the Steam Menu, then select Power Switch to Desktop.

  2. Select the Discover Software Center icon on the taskbar.

  3. In Discover Software Center, select Applications Internet Web Browsers.

  4. Find Microsoft Edge in the list of apps and select Install.

  5. Once it's installed, close Discover Software Center, return to the Desktop, and select Application Launcher.

  6. Select Internet, then right-click on Microsoft Edge and select Add to Steam.

  7. In the Add a Game window, scroll to find Microsoft Edge, check the box next to it, and select Add Selected Programs.

  8. Back on the Desktop, select Application Launcher > System Konsole (terminal window).

  9. Edge will need to be able to access your Steam Deck controls with udev, so we need to give it override access. Set it by entering this command and pressing Enter:flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.EdgeThen enter exit and press Enter to close Konsole.

  10. Open Steam by selecting the Steam icon on the desktop.

  11. Select the Library tab, navigate to Microsoft Edge in the list, and then right-click it and select Properties.

  12. Make the following changes to the Microsoft Edge shortcut:

    1. Change the name (next to the icon) to Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta)

    2. Scroll down to LAUNCH OPTIONS and append the following (after @@u @@):--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"

    3. Close this window when you are done.

    4. Now, navigate to Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) in the Steam Library, right-click it, and select Manage Controller layout.

    5. In the Steam Controller Configurator, select BROWSE CONFIGS. Under Templates, select Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad. Select APPLY CONFIGURATION, then select DONE.

    6. Adding custom artwork to your shortcut

      At this point your shortcut will work; you can close the Steam window, select the Return to Gaming Mode icon on the desktop and find your shortcut in your game library in the NON-STEAM section. However, we've got some artwork for you that will make look it a little nicer. Here's how to add that:
